Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I trust you with something this big?

Fair question, and one you should be asking anyone you hire to help you navigate a life change this significant. My qualifications are formal and lived, built in parallel over 14 years of actually doing this: a degree in Human Development and Business, certifications in Cross-Cultural Management, Coaching, and TESOL, and continuing education in Diversity, Global Collaboration, and Leadership from Harvard — alongside 10 years abroad across Southern Africa and South Korea, working in executive nonprofit leadership, ESL, PR, editorial, content creation for Korean tourism boards, and support for military families overseas.

What that means for you is that I understand the logistics of relocation and the human cost of getting them wrong. WhereTu isn't built on a travel blog or a visa database. It's built on 14 years of cross-cultural expertise and genuine, multi-continent, hard-earned experience.

I've never lived abroad. Is WhereTu a good fit for me?

WhereTu exists because moving abroad for the first time is really hard, and most resources assume you already know the questions to ask. You don't have to have done this before. You just have to want to. That's where we start.

I'm interested in moving abroad, but I don't have a country picked yet. Is it too early to reach out?

That's actually the best time. Most people wait until they're overwhelmed to ask for help. Coming in before you've committed to a destination means we can help you choose wisely based on your visa eligibility, lifestyle priorities, income, and timeline, instead of reverse-engineering a plan around a decision that may not fit your life.

What makes WhereTu different from just Googling or using AI?

Google gives you information. AI gives you outdated information. Neither gives you a framework for your specific situation. WhereTu is built on 14 moves across three continents, and that difference shows up in the details: what breaks down after you land, what visa officers actually care about, what nobody tells you until you're already there. That's what we help you prepare for.

How does WhereTu actually help me?

WhereTu works with you through every phase of your move — before you leave, when you land, and as you settle in. We call these the leaving, landing, and living phases. That means helping you figure out which countries and visa paths actually match your life, building a personalized relocation blueprint, supporting you through paperwork and timelines, and staying in your corner through the messy middle that most relocation resources never talk about. Think of it less like a service you hire and more like a knowledgeable friend who's already made the move and wants to make sure you’re supported at every step.

What does the WhereTu process actually look like?

It starts with a short discovery call — no formalities, just a real conversation about where you are, where you want to go, and whether we're the right fit for each other. If we are, we move into the Relocation Roadmap: a strategy session where we map out your visa path, timeline, and the specific steps that apply to your situation. From there, you choose the level of support that matches your needs, from guided self-paced resources to full hands-on coaching through your first decision points to your first days on the ground.

Do you only cover certain countries?

WhereTu started with deep expertise in South Korea and continues to expand across Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Our geographic breadth is one of the things that sets us apart — we're not a Europe-only resource. That said, we'll always tell you if a destination falls outside our current expertise rather than give you advice we can't stand behind.

What does the visa process actually look like? Is it as complicated as people say?

It depends on the visa type and country, and that's exactly why the first step is understanding your options clearly before you start. Some paths are surprisingly straightforward. Others have hidden requirements that derail applications at the last minute. WhereTu's role is to make sure you know what you're walking into before you walk into it, not after.

Why should I hire a coach when I can just figure this out myself?

You can DIY this. Plenty of people do. They spend 4–6 months piecing together information from forums, Facebook groups, government websites, and YouTube rabbit holes, and most of them still show up to their new country missing something important, usually because the right information for their specific situation was buried under a hundred answers written for someone else's.

Hiring a coach isn't about capability; it's about cost. What's six months of anxiety, wrong turns, and wasted applications actually worth to you? What's the cost of getting a visa wrong, or arriving somewhere unprepared for what comes after the paperwork? WhereTu clients don't move faster because we're smarter than Google. They move faster because they stop solving the wrong problems.

Is WhereTu only for Americans?

Our content and services are primarily designed for U.S. citizens navigating international relocation. If you hold a different country’s passport, some of our resources will still be useful, but the 1:1 services are most specifically built for Americans moving abroad.

I'm worried I'll start this process and then hit a wall. How does WhereTu support me through setbacks?

Setbacks are part of every move. We've hit plenty: wrong stop on the bus, rejected applications, jobs that fell through. WhereTu doesn't just give you a plan, it gives you someone in your corner when the plan stops working. That's built into how we work with clients from the start, not as an add-on.

What if I decide moving abroad isn't right for me after we start working together?

That's a completely valid outcome—and honestly, sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is help you get clear on that before you upend your life. WhereTu isn't in the business of selling you a move. We help you make the right decision for YOU, whatever that turns out to be

What's the difference between your free resources and your paid services?

The free resources—guides, downloads, and content—give you a map. The paid services give you a guide. A map tells you the roads exist. A guide knows which ones have detours, which ones are under construction, and which ones you should avoid entirely based on where you're actually trying to go.

Where do I even start?

Start with the Move Abroad Starter Kit.

It's the resource we wish had existed before our first move, and it's designed specifically for the moment you're in right now: curious, probably a little overwhelmed, and not yet sure what you don't know.

Inside, you'll find everything you need to go from "thinking about it" to actually having a plan:

  • An honest reality check on what moving abroad fixes and what it doesn't

  • A breakdown of every major visa type (employment, digital nomad, job seeker, heritage, passive income, and more) so you can see which paths are actually open to you

  • A Visa Pathway Comparison Tool to weigh your options side by side

  • A Move Abroad Budget Template to build a number you can actually trust

  • A realistic timeline and a pre-departure checklist so nothing falls through the cracks

It's low-cost, self-paced, and built to give you clarity without requiring you to commit to anything. Most people finish it knowing exactly which visa type fits their situation and what their first real step is, which is further than most people get after months of Googling.

How do I know if I'm ready to take the next step?

If you've been thinking about this for weeks on end, you're ready. The people who work with WhereTu aren't impulsive, they're thoughtful, and they've usually been sitting with this idea long enough that the real question isn't if but how. The discovery call exists to help you answer that. It's low-pressure, it's free, and designed specifically so that you’ll leave with more clarity than you came in with, regardless of what you decide.
